Michael A. Murray, JD

Michael is a partner at SB LLP and practices in the areas of family law, estate and civil litigation.

In family law, Michael has experience handling matters involving parenting, child support, spousal support, partner support, and property division. He works with couples, both married and unmarried (adult interdependent partners), specializes in separation and divorce and has experience and training in alternative dispute resolution. When appropriate, he can negotiate out of court for clients in separation and divorce matters resulting in mutual resolution documented by separation agreement (minutes of settlement).

Michael has appeared in family docket, regular family chambers, special family chambers and conducted numerous trials and hearings. He has experience leading settlement meetings and negotiations, and in drafting pre-nuptial, cohabitation, and post-nuptial agreements. Michael is also in the process of becoming a Collaborative Family Lawyer, where he will become specialized in helping couples reach mutually acceptable out of court agreements that are in their best interests.

Michael is the department head for the Wills & Estates practice group at Sb LLP and oversees estate litigation matters at the firm.

In civil litigation, Michael has experience handling construction disputes and builders’ lien matters, debt collection, contractual disputes, employment matters, civil fraud, and injunctive relief, representing both plaintiffs and defendants.

He has appeared at the Alberta Court of Justice, Court of King’s Bench of Alberta, and the Alberta Court of Appeal.

He has also presented for the CBA Young Lawyer’s North Section on provincial court practices and novel case law in social media injunctive relief.

Michael began his career at Shourie Bhatia LLP (now SB LLP) as an articling student to Nitin Bhatia.

While attending law school, Michael was a member of the Varsity gold team for three years, competing in national and international tournaments that required drive and determination for success. Michael applies this same drive and determination to his legal practice focused in family law and litigation.

Michael is currently the Vice President on the Board of the University of Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas Golf Team Alumni. He remains an avid golfer and sports fan, and enjoys spending time with family in his free time.
